School violence

TQC Discussion Lists: EDSE 784 (Fall 2001) Dr. Brinker-Kent: School violence
By Jennifer McLeod (Usc_mcleod) on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 06:49 pm:

I had a new worhty event happen not too long
ago. A young 13- 14 year old boy arrived at
school with a 38 caliber special. He even had
a hit list. When it was first called to the
attention of the administration, they did not
believe the story. It was not until another
student reported the gun to the Resource
Officer that action was taken. What would
happen if something did occur. Could you only
imagine. I am alittle concerned that the word
gang was brought up in the conversation for
the explanation for the gun being on campus.
This is SOuth Carolina, I have seen gangs, I
lived in a gang area and this is not one. I think
we need to take a closer look at what students
are doing and look for warning signs.
If this was not enough, the same week we
had a bomb threat. What a week. Thank god
its almost over.

At my school there have been acouple of bomb threats as well. One time we all ahd to leave the school and wait in the football field for about 3 hours. I am glad they evacuated everyone though. Two of my so-called "at risk" boys came in late for class one day. They had gone to the resource officer to report that someone had something in their schoolbag that that person was not suppose to bring to school. Later it cam e out that it was a gun. I was so proud of my students, because they are two I would not have been confident about handling the situation as appropriately as they did!

I am lucky that I haven't even seen a fight going on at Fulmer. But that is scary to know that kids are carrying guns in South Carolina schools. In Health education we hear about the statistics but don't think about it REALLY happening. I sometimes wonder if what I am doing in my field is really effective. If there is any hope. We can teach the kids about violence prevention until we are blue in the face. I wonder if it is actually doing any good?

Well, it's been real! This next week is our last week and I'm sure every body is ready to go. I know I am. I am ready to get paid for this. I am motivated-but not so motivated that I want to do this for free much longer. It will be sad though, leaving those precious kids and the wonderful student teacher I am with. She was surely a mentor to me. I really learned so much student teaching.
