Image Making and the Writing Process: Integrating Art to Increase Ability

This project uses art projects such as book making and story quilts to enhance and develop students' reading and writing abilities. Specifically, this project targets areas such as organization, figurative language, sentence structure, and vocabulary within the framework of various art projects, which requires both academic and creative abilities.

A small group of 5th grade AAP students worked with Ms. Collier, the AAP teacher, to write an original story about a brother and sister who find a time machine in their garage.

Ms. James, the art teacher, worked with the same group to illustrate the book and do the layout work.

The book was entered in the Richland District One Visual Literacy Bookmaking Contest and won an award! The exact award will not be known until it is announced later this year.
