Dreher High School "Rounds"
Fall 2001 - Spring 2002

Dreher High School
The "Rounds" model of professional development was initiated at the University of South Carolina at Dreher High School, which is one of six PDS sites included in the Teacher Quality Partners Project located in Columbia, SC.

Members of the tripartite, Dr. David Keiser from Montclair State University, Dr. Scott Gwara and Dr. Christie Friend from the USC Department of English, and Dr. Jane Zenger from the USC College of Education, conduct a classroom observation "rounds" with pre-service interns in master teacher Dr. Karen Kaminski's English classroom.

After the classroom observation, the debriefing was "intense" and "interesting" according to one of the interns, as the tripartite and the interns exchanged their experiences in the classroom of Dr. Kaminski.

Each of the interns discussed a different aspect of Dr. Kaminski's teaching style, which included constant use of Socratic questioning to keep the students on task and thinking. Each also talked about Dr. Kaminski's classroom management methods that they had noticed during the observation Dr.David Keiser, consultant from Montclair State University, noted:

"The initial rounds process at USC was a success: pre-service teachers acted like medical interns, asked appropriate questions of both the team and the observed teacher, and left knowing a bit more about the intricacies of classroom management and the Socratic method."
