Crayton Middle School Inquiry Projects
Fall 2002 - Spring 2003

Students Using Technology

Title of Project: Students Using Technology
Question: Will the use of computers motivate students in mathematics?
Summary: The purpose of this project is to determine if technology motivates students' interest in math. The multimedia projector, with the use of math-centered computer games, will be used in whole class instruction. Student's motivation will be ssessed through questioning practices and portfolios.
Lead Teachers: Eleanor Yanity, Dave Dolin

Eleanor Yanity's Final Report:
The purpose of this project is to see if student interest in math and Science is enhanced with the use of technology. Many students find learning math and science boring, irrelevant, and difficult. The challenges for me are to motivate students to want to learn math and to use instructions that are interesting to them. I know that research shows that children are naturally drawn to technology such as electronic games because of their exploratory and interactive nature, graphics, and the possibility of doing active manipulations, which is difficult to obtain with regular paper activity. Electronic games also give students a feeling of control. I use many software programs that can be shared with the entire class using the multimedia projector and the large screen.
Through a process of observations and structured interviews, I assessed the qualityof learning that is happening in my classroom due to introduction of multimedia projector and large screen. I used questioning practices to determine students' motivation.
As evidenced by the student's letters, they all find using the pro lite and large screen
"fun". They are motivated by the technology, and eager to complete the tasks that are presented to them by the computer .
This is on going research, which I will continue, into the next school year .Due to the late arrival of the screen, I feel I need longer to assess students' actual learning. I know I have motivated them to use technology by observing their eagerness to use the computer and the software that we had previewed on the large screen.
