Crayton Middle School "Rounds"
Fall 2002 - Spring 2003

Teacher Observed: Louise Sanders
6th Grade AAP Reading/Language Arts
February 26, 2003
Observer: Jane Zenger
Objective:
Students work in small groups to discuss a novel, Tangerine, by Edward Bloor. Students write answers to questions to check understanding. Students are read to by teacher.
Special Needs:
One student was asked to read and was cautioned to read slowly and stop at periods ( a sign that oral reading skills were being improved)
Book Discussions Included:
•Questions on details and how authors work (students discussed the use of adjectives. ..etc.)
•Predictions of what might happen next.
Rounds:
•Students are part of a "friendly" competition with other classes for accelerated reader points
•Teacher gives frequent feedback for good answers -varied feedback is backed up with an example of what exactly was good.
Strategies:
• Use of "re-cap" to review and bring everyone up to par on book 2. Uses the time for silent reading
•Walks around room and checks progress
•Reads aloud to students (models oral reading with inflections)
