Hyatt Park Elementary School Inquiry Projects
Fall 2003 - Spring 2004

Hyatt Park Habitat or Lily Pond Science
Science Consultant:
Katrina Nyland, USC Marine Science Ph.D student

The inquiry project of Lily Pond Science expanded over the year. Originally, Ms. Erving, the science teacher and Ms. James, the art teacher designed an interactive unit to study the life cycle of frogs. Click here to see the Frog Thematic Units. Many things changed since the grant was funded. Ms. Erving retired because of poor health but Ms. Lucas volunteered to work with the science segment. The pond became a part of an outdoor garden habitat that includes a South Carolina Fence Garden, a Butterfly Garden and multiple gardens of flowers and vegetables. Each grade level CD through Fifth has participated in the planning and planting of the habitat. Teachers have conducted inquiry lessons and students are responsible for watering, weeding, maintaining, studying and investigating what goes on there.

On April 20, 2004, the PTO sponsored a Grand Garden Celebration. Around 200 people attended. Ms. Lucas and the fourth graders presented a program explaining how the garden was going to be used to study ecology.

Our school is grateful for all the help and funding provided through Dr. Zenger and her assistants Ms. Schneider and Ms. Nyland, for the additional PDS funding provided through and Inguiry grant directed by Dr. Fields, for funding from Columbia’s Partners in Education, the Hyatt Park PTO and for all the other help and hard work from the students, community and teachers.

The Lily Pond and Garden Habitat will be an ongoing project regenerated every year with new Inquiry projects, plants and creatures. It will provide an excellent place of opportunity for learning and enjoyment at our school.

Ms. Nyland, USC assistant, explains to the students how water plants help the eco-system. The students are getting ready to fill the pond and plant oxygen producing greenery. Fifth grade students are painting markers for the garden. They will put the grade number on the plates so each section can easily be found.

The butterfly garden is one part of the Hyatt Park Habitat. The third graders are in charge of the project. They have planted six butterfly bushes and other flowers. They have a wet sand area for the “pooling” area. Soon they hope to see the butterflies arrive. Ms. Teri Lucas and her fourth grade class are planting flowers around the pond. They have been conducting science experiments about pond life.
