AC Moore Elementary School

Resource Lab

This project was created in collaboration with the USC pre-service teachers. The purpose is to build a library of materials for their development while exposing them to great instructional practices.

Airport High School

Writing Across the Curriculum and Improving Students' Vocabulary and Writing Skills

Dr. Suzanne Doherty of Collins Educational Associates conducted an inservice workshop for teachers and USC interns.

Bradley Elementary School

Resource Lab
Lead Teacher: Margo Jackson
Request for Technology: Students and interns will be videotaped throughout the year. This camera will help the interns document their experience at our school. It will also assist all teachers involved with an inquiry project document and provide information for the TQC website.

Inquiry Question: If Students are showing, in various ways, that they care about the well-being of others, will their misbehavior decrease and in turn show their peers, classmates, and adults that they care for them? Will they be able to express their ideas through conversation and journaling?


Bradley Campus Native Habitat Restoration Project
Lead Teachers: Betsy Russell, Margo Jackson, Kezia Myers, Judy Spears, Wanda Moore, Michelle Kennedy
Inquiry Question: What can we learn about the original ecology and habitat around our school in order to restore part of our campus to its original likeness as far as plant and animal life are concerned?


Writing: Thinking through the Process

Inquiry Question: If students have daily opportunity to write drama variety of 'authentic' themes, will their writing improve both in content and mechanics?


Famous Historical Individuals that We Can Count On
Lead Teacher: Margo Jackson
Inquiry Question: If students are introduced via drama to the contributions of famous historical individuals, will this strengthen their knowledge and interest in the areas of social science, math and literature?

Student Publishing: A Reader's Handbook
Lead Teachers: Sandy Vassallo, Dave Dolin, Ann Carbone, Betty Friday, Su Hodgson, Tom Thorpe, Beth Thrailkill, John Rushman, Courtney Wolfe
This resource will be a valuable tool to help our students improve their performance on the reading portion of the PACT. The collection of The Reader's Handbook will be cataloged and kept in the professional collection for checkout by our teachers and may be used USC interns as well.


World Geography Inquiry Project

Inquiry Question:
How can students and teachers improve student attainment of skills in learning economics and global studies, which will ultimately improve strategies in preparing for PACT Social Studies?


Gravity Rules! Or, How did Galileo know that stuff?

Inquiry Question: How do Galileo's laws governing falling bodies affect everything from baseball to drop rides at the fair?


Sci-Fi Hunt: Study of Fossils/SC Geology
Lead Teachers: Selina Latimore, Calvernetta Williams
Inquiry Question: How can students and teachers improve attainment of skills in comprehension and analysis of scientific literature and use these skills to interpret experimental data that supports scientific investigations and will this analysis help teachers improve strategies in preparing for the Science and Reading Comprehension sections of the PACT?

Dreher High School


Professional Development Project
Lead Teacher: Jessica Grabiner
The purpose of this project is to videotape Dreher's master teachers doing what they do best. We will choose a few general topics (classroom management, collaborative learning, setting high expectations, etc.) and videotape teachers instructing their students. We will use these videos to guide novice teachers and interns.

Horrell Hill Elementary

Using Book Bags in the Classroom to Increase Interest in Independent Reading
Lead Teacher: Judy Barnette
Inquiry Question: Will student interest in reading independently increase when they have a variety of texts that are on their individual level?


Developing Scientific Knowledge
Lead Teachers: Saudah Collins, Mary Jade Haney
Inquiry Questions:

  • Will students gain a greater understanding of how to identify and effectively utilize the science process skills as they complete inquiry-style investigations?
  • Will students be able to document their learning and use this documentation to create a product to share with other students?
  • Will third grade students be able to critique non-fiction science literature for its appropriates for younger students?
  • Will students be able to assist younger students with the investigation of a question of their interest?

Hyatt Park Elementary School

"Your State" The PACT Map Interactive Game
Lead Teacher: Shawn Norris
Inquiry Question: Can students improve PACT scores on the social studies and geographical sections by utilizing physical education and an interactive map?



Sea Shell Studies

Artist Carl Copeland came to our school to help the fifth grade students take a closer look at sea shells.


Resource Lab

Hyatt Park Reading Patrol (HPRPP)
Lead Teachers: Presphonia Perkins, Teri Lucas, Andrea Gray, Carolyn Walker, Djwana Snider, Edia Benson
Inquiry Question: Will implementing a year long reading incentive program that is designed to motivate, stimulate, strengthen and build family literacy and student reading interest in school and in the community improve reading readiness, reading fluency, reading proficiency
and family literacy?



Hyatt Park Habitat or Lily Pond Science
Lead Teachers: Terri Lucas, Nancy James
Artist Carl Copeland came to the school to help the fifth grade students take a closer look at sea shells. Mr. Copeland had painted the South Carolina map that Shawn Norris used in his Inquiry proposal last year. The students identified their shells and compiled a short book about them. The book consisted of the drawings they did under Mr. Copeland and the information and writings they did with Ms. James and USC consultants, Ms. Nyland and Ms. Schnieder.

Meadowfield Elementary School

It's Habit-Forming

Service Learning Project/Resource Lab

In order to continue the Caldecott inquiry project with sixth and seventh grade language arts teachers and two USC interns this school year, we are requesting continued support to purchase the ink and binding materials needed to complete this project and copies of six Caldecott winners that are featured in the nonfiction text A Caldecott Celebration: Six Artists and their paths to the Caldecott Medal, by Leonard S. Marcus.
